Consultation

Last week, I have consulted with Madam Forest on my progress.. I am kinda stuck as I couldn't find any installation related to my topic. As she suggested that I shouldn't look for only my topic, I should search more related to my topic, dont get too focused. As I was searching, I found some interesting video based installations. It was interesting but it was very far related to what I wanted to do.. In fact, I am not even so sure what I gona do for FYP yet.. Kinda stuck and have no idea yet..

Here are the some interesting installations that I found..

IPad

During our meeting for SRI, Mr.Khong told us that he bought few IPad's for the faculty. Since he told we can request for it for Final Year Project, I did a research about it and also will it be useful for my project.

Here are features of an IPad:

LED-Backlit IPS Display
The high-resolution, 9.7-inch LED-backlit IPS display on iPad is remarkably crisp and vivid. Which makes it perfect for web browsing, watching movies, or viewing photos. With iPad, there is no up or down. It’s designed to show off your content in portrait or landscape orientation with every turn. And because it uses a display technology called IPS (in-plane switching), it has a wide, 178° viewing angle. So you can hold it almost any way you want and still get a brilliant picture, with excellent color and contrast.
Multi-Touch
The Multi-Touch screen on iPad is based on the same revolutionary technology on iPhone. But the technology has been completely reengineered for the larger iPad surface, making it extremely precise and responsive. So whether you’re zooming in on a map, flicking through your photos, or deleting an email, iPad responds with incredible accuracy. And it does just what you want it to.

Thin and Light
One of the first things you’ll notice about iPad is how thin and light it is. The screen is 9.7 inches measured diagonally. So overall, it’s slightly smaller than a magazine. At just 1.5 pounds and 0.5 inch thin, you can use it anywhere. And a slight curve to the back makes it easy to pick up and comfortable to hold.

Up to 10 Hours of Battery Life

To maximize battery life, Apple engineers took the same lithium-polymer battery technology they developed for Mac notebook computers and applied it to the iPad. As a result, you can use iPad for up to 10 hours while surfing the web on Wi-Fi, watching videos, or listening to music. While surfing the web on a 3G data network, you can get up to 9 hours of battery life.

Wireless
With built-in 802.11n, iPad takes advantage of the fastest Wi-Fi networks. It automatically locates available Wi-Fi networks, which you can join with a few taps. iPad also comes with Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR, letting you connect to devices like wireless headphones or the Apple Wireless Keyboard.
3G
iPad is also available in a 3G model with superfast data speeds up to 7.2 Mbps.3 So if you’re traveling or you happen to be somewhere without a Wi-Fi network, you can still get a fast connection for surfing the web, downloading email, or getting directions.

Performance
The A4 chip inside iPad was custom-designed by Apple engineers to be extremely powerful yet extremely power efficient. The performance is unlike anything you’ve ever seen on a touch-based device. Which makes iPad fantastic for everything from productivity apps to games. At the same time, the A4 chip is so power efficient that it helps iPad get up to 10 hours of battery life on a single charge. And iPad is available with a choice of 16GB, 32GB, or 64GB of flash storage, giving you lots of room for your photos, movies, music, apps, and more.

Connectivity

The dock connector port on the bottom of iPad allows you to dock and charge it. It also lets you connect to accessories like the iPad Camera Connection Kit and the iPad Keyboard Dock. You’ll find many accessories designed to be compatible with the dock connector port.
Audio
The powerful built-in speaker produces rich, full sound perfect for watching a movie or listening to music. iPad also comes with a headphone jack and a built-in microphone.
Accessories
What makes iPad even better? Accessories. The iPad Keyboard Dock combines a dock with a full-size keyboard. You can import photos from a digital camera or SD card with the iPad Camera Connection Kit. The iPad Case not only protects your iPad, it lets you use it in various positions. And different adapters let you connect iPad to TVs, projectors, and displays.

Since its multi touch functional and it has all the features to run an application, I might replace my touch screen with an IPad. Makes my work easier and faster. And it could be interesting too!

Research Studies

Equipment Studies
Webcam
  • Webcams are video capturing devices connected to computers or computer networks, often using USB or, if they connect to networks, ethernet or Wi-Fi. They are well-known for their low manufacturing costs and flexible applications.History:
Started in 1991, the first such camera, called the CoffeeCam, was pointed at the Trojan room coffee pot in the computer science department of Cambridge University. The camera was finally switched off on August 22, 2001.
The oldest webcam, as the technology came to be known, still operating is FogCam at San Francisco State University, which has been running continuously since 1994.

  • Uses of Webcam:
    · Capture Image
    · Record Video
    · Video Conferencing
    · Video Security
    · Input Device
    · Sensor
    · Motion Detect
    · Webcast
    · Live Streaming
    · Video Greeting Cards
Video Projector
  • A video projector takes a video signal and projects the corresponding image on a projection screen using a lens system. All video projectors use a very bright light to project the image, and most modern ones can correct any curves, blurriness, and other inconsistencies through manual settings. Video projectors are widely used for conference room presentations, classroom training, home theatre and live events applications. Projectors are widely used in many schools and other education providers to project onto an interactive white board to interactively teach pupils.
  • A video projector, also known as a Digital Projector, may be built into a cabinet with a rear-projection screen (rear-projection TV, or RPTV) to form a single unified display device, now popular for “home theater” applications.
 Touch Sensor
  •   A touch screen sensor is a clear glass panel with a touch responsive surface. The touch sensor/panel is placed over a display screen so that the responsive area of the panel covers the viewable area of the video screen. There are several different touch sensor technologies on the market today, each using a different method to detect touch input. The sensor generally has an electrical current or signal going through it and touching the screen can cause a voltage or signal change. This change is used to determine the location of the touch to the screen.
  • How Does a Touchscreen Work?
A basic touchscreen has three main components:
    1         Touch sensor;
    2         Controller;
    3         Software driver.
The touchscreen is an input device, so it needs to be combined with a display and a PC or other device to make a complete touch input system.

    Touchscreen Technology
              Resistive touchscreen
              Capacitive touchscreen
              Infrared  touchscreen
              Surface acoustic wave (SAW) touchscreen
              Strain gauge touchscreen
              Optical imaging touchscreen
              Dispersive signal technology touchscreen

Research Studies

After looking through the ideas for installation, I have conducted a full studies on the details of the Installation and also my application.

Software Studies
  • Adobe Flash
  • Adobe Premiere/ Any other video editing softwares
  • Zone Trigger (as an option)

Webcam Zone Trigger

  • Zone Trigger is the first multi-purpose motion detection software.
  • This means that motion detection isn't just for security anymore.
  • Useful in such sectors as art, marketing, quality control, automated inventory, security and monitoring, motion detection has never hit so close to home. You already knew that computers can do much more than keep books and play video games. Tools like Zone Trigger bring new possibilities to you and your business.
  • Traditional software simply alerts you when motion is detected within the camera`s view.
  • Zone Trigger lets you decide what will happen when motion is detected in an unlimited number of "Hot Spots" located anywhere within the camera's range. You can bind any action to a Hot Spot, making Zone Trigger a very versatile tool.
  • An awesome tool to built custom systems. For security, art, monitoring and automation, Webcam Zone Trigger enables you to quickly build a reliable system at low cost.
Media Zone Trigger
  • Specifically designed to display video content on one or multiple screens, Media Zone Trigger provides a simple way to produce high-quality interactive signage that will upgrade your advertising, show booth, marketing system, or any project requiring audio/video files synchronized with motion detection.
Audio Zone Trigger
  • Audio Zone Trigger is a sound detection software.
  • It takes live audio from any input source and enables the computer to react to it in a user-specified manner.
  • The sound-detection system lets you set any number of Triggers that perform any number of user-defined responses (record sound, run a file, execute a hotkey, etc.).
  • The triggers can also dynamicaly adap to the environment's sound volume to detect only sound peeks. You can set each trigger's sensitivity and actions individually, giving you full control.
